The Racial Wealth Gap—Moving to Systemic Solutions

As important as homeownership, business ownership, and higher education are, we must go beyond simply promoting more of each if we want to close the racial wealth gap. In this series, Shelterforce widens the lens on the racial wealth gap and what needs to be done about it.

County Health Rankings & Roadmaps (CHR&R), a program of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, hosted a webinar on May 10 titled “Why Wealth Matters to Your Health.” It was the first of a two-part series called Unjust and Unfair: Health Consequences of the Racial Wealth Divide.

The panel, moderated by Ericka Burroughs-Girardi, senior outreach specialist at CHR&R, discussed how the racial wealth gap began, why it persists, and why traditional pathways to wealth have not closed it. Panelists included Michael Stevenson, CHR&R’s evidence and policy analysis team leader, and Shelterforce’s CEO and Editor-in-Chief Miriam Axel-Lute.

The webinar was accompanied by a Resource Guide, with information on tools and resources.

The second webinar in the series, Closing the Racial Wealth Gap with Innovative Solutions, will take place June 14.
