NHI/_Shelterforce_ Associate Director and Editor Miriam Axel-Lute appeared at an event last Tuesday, co-sponsored by the New America Foundation and National Council of La Raza, that looked at how communities are handling the foreclosure crisis and what proposals should be elevated to the national policy discussion. Started off by a keynote from Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), the panels included NCRC’s Jim Carr; Wade Henderson of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights; Adam Levitin, Associate Professor of Law, Georgetown University Law; Alon Cohen of the Center for American Progress Center; NAF’s Reid Cramer; and NCLR’s Janis Bowdler.

Cramer sat down afterward with Axel-Lute in a one-on-one focusing on note purchases for foreclosure prevention — a neighborhood-stabilizing market opportunity that allows for distressed loan modification. The result, Axel-Lute says, is that homeowners “are no longer underwater, and they have a sustainable payment.”
