Reporter
Description
Shelterforce, the only national publication devoted to affordable housing and community development news, is seeking a fulltime reporter.
The reporter will:
- Report and write a variety of affordable housing trends, policy, and movement stories. These will include short, straightforward news items, and longer, more complex stories.
- Take a particular interest, in the outcomes for housing affordability and housing justice of housing supply focused reforms, and the intersections of the “pro housing” and housing justice movements.
- Stay up to date on major changes in affordable housing and community development policy and practice throughout the country.
- Develop source relationships in all regions of the country and all facets of the housing and community development world to generate stories.
Qualifications:
- Five years reporting experience, ideally with some experience covering housing.
- Strong, quick writing ability. Ability to communicate complex and controversial topics in long-form with clarity.
- Devotion to accuracy.
- Devotion to advancing the goals of healthy communities and housing justice. We do not pretend to be neutral; however, we also believe that no one has all the answers, and we are not a venue for promoting a single approach or solution.
- Comfortable and culturally competent in a diverse workplace and diverse field. Committed to active anti-racism.
- Willingness and ability to travel periodically.
- Located within the U.S. and typically available for virtual meetings between 10:30am and 5pm weekdays Eastern Time. (Position is remote.)
Also a plus:
- Prior experience with affordable housing and community development topics—either as a reporter or as lived experience, or both.
- Experience distilling reporting into short-form video.
Position:
- Remote
- Salary range $65,000-$75,000 DOE

Shelterforce is 51-year-old nonprofit publication centered around the fight for healthy communities. We serve the community development and housing justice worlds with in-depth stories on how housing organizing, community planning, and affordable housing development happen and could happen better.
We also serve the wider public with stories that explore housing justice and community development issues and let them know what organizers and community developers are doing about it. We have a particular interest in the roles and perspectives of organizers, community-based organizations, and nonprofits working on these topics.
We publish a combination of reported stories and practitioner voices (opinion and how-to).
