Shelterforce seeks a publisher/executive director to advance its mission, grow its audience and influence, and strategically and sustainably guide the organization through an evolving and dynamic media landscape.
Shelterforce is the nation's leading source of reporting on the community development field. Launched in 1975, Shelterforce publishes a quarterly print magazine, a web publication, and a weekly e-newsletter. A nonprofit 501(c)3 independent media organization, Shelterforce’s mission is to realize a society where everyone is able to live in a healthy, just community with access to sufficient opportunity to realize their potential. Shelterforce supports those working toward healthy, just communities by publishing independent media content that informs them, challenges them, connects them, inspires them, and advocates for their work to others.
Shelterforce has a devoted readership and is supported by grants, advertising, subscriptions, and individual contributions. Our readers primarily come from the worlds of affordable housing, community organizing and planning, and community economic development, and they include community leaders, nonprofit staff, policymakers, researchers, and professionals with a wide range of interests, from housing to arts and culture to health care. But they are all working in some way to create healthy, just communities.
Shelterforce began as a media organization and remains so. Our website, on which we publish new content almost daily, has about 62,000 page views a month. Our weekly e-newsletter has over 11,350 subscribers and has an open rate of 35+ percent. Shelterforce has two special desks—one focused on health and one focused on arts, culture, and community development.

About the Job
Reporting to the board of directors, the next publisher/executive director of Shelterforce will oversee the strategic plan of the organization, lead the growth of the organization’s reach, extend its brand, and grow revenue while delivering on its mission. The publisher/executive director will oversee expanding audiences, deepening existing funding relationships and developing new ones, and strengthening organizational capacity to create and deliver high-quality journalism across a growing range of platforms. The job location is Montclair, New Jersey.
The publisher/executive director will be a key front-facing leader who will maintain Shelterforce’s role as a thought leader on a wide range of community development issues through speaking and participation in conferences and other professional meetings. The publisher/executive director will oversee and provide leadership for all activities of Shelterforce, including fundraising, advertising, marketing, customer relations, human resources, and finance. And they will work with the editor to develop and build editorial partnerships with other media organizations.
The publisher/executive director will develop an annual budget and be responsible for setting and achieving revenue goals. Partnering with the board of directors, the publisher/executive director will organize board meetings, advance strategic and operational goals of Shelterforce, and serve as the primary point of contact between staff and the board. They will sustain, inspire and enhance the culture of the organization and the value it places on the people working here.
The next publisher/executive director will be an innovative thinker, experienced leader with an entrepreneurial mindset and a passion for mission and substantial understanding of new, digital, and traditional media. The successful candidate will bring the vision and skills needed to guide and grow Shelterforce and be able to identify and recognize key private and philanthropic partners who add value and bring resources in a rapidly changing media environment.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of success in top or near-top leadership of an organization or business, ideally related to media and content development. They must understand and have an affinity for community development or other social justice activities. They must be able to develop and implement a strategic vision for how Shelterforce can continue to reach more people through new and existing platforms while ensuring financial sustainability for the organization long-term.
The successful candidates will have proven management experience including the ability to develop, manage, and meet an annual budget and develop innovative and creative resource growth strategies. They will be comfortable with and culturally competent in managing and building a small, diverse, independent, and partially-remote team.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience and competitive with other similar nonprofit organizations. Benefits include health insurance, vacation, paid holidays, and Simple IRA retirement plan.
