      Shelterforce is looking for a dynamic individual to help run the organization, increase revenue, and increase awareness of Shelterforce.

      Founded in 1975, Shelterforce is a small, progressive, nonprofit media organization driven by a belief in the ability of all communities to be healthy and thriving. Shelterforce is the only national independent publication written for advocates and professionals dedicated to community development and working in such areas as housing, jobs, transportation, education, health, environment, arts and culture, and other social justice and racial equity issues. Shelterforce strengthens the work of community builders by bringing them inspiring stories, useful models, insightful policy and program analysis, and by connecting them in conversation about key questions facing the field. Shelterforce is a quarterly print magazine, an active website with almost daily posts, a weekly e-newsletter, and soon a podcast.

      The successful candidate will be responsible for increasing earned income from advertising, circulation, editorial services, and donations; performing analytics and developing plans based on that analysis; fundraising including grants management, research, and proposal writing; office operations including board management, finance, and various HR activities. The person in this position will work closely with the publisher, taking over completely some tasks and assisting on others.

      Located in the heart of Montclair, our office is small, sunny, friendly, supportive, collaborative, diverse, family friendly, and pet friendly. It’s a nice place to work with a great and talented staff comfortable wearing many hats.

      This position has four main areas of responsibility:

      Marketing and Promotion

      Work closely with the publisher and staff to develop communications strategies and messaging, implement and coordinate development of external communication materials, and help develop opportunities for media coverage. Develop and manage strategies for promoting specific Shelterforce content and increasing the organization’s visibility within and outside the field. Build our social media presence.

      Earned Income                                                        

      Manage and grow advertising, sponsorship, and circulation on each platform, and other revenue sources. Work with publisher and other staff to generate ideas for potential editorial revenue-earning projects, and participate in proposal development for and management of those projects.

      Fundraising

      Help build and maintain relationships with funders and other supporters; identify and pursue new foundation, corporate, and individual funding sources; help draft and edit proposals, letters of inquiries, and grant reports; guarantee all funding deadlines are met including grant reporting.

      Office Operations

      Successfully manage the day-to-day operations of the organization, including: oversee bookkeeping, audit, financial reporting; review health insurance annually; assure equipment and software are up-to-date and functioning; manage board (communications, scheduling, reporting, etc.), and some HR activities.

      Requirements

      • Knowledgeable about and committed to the mission of Shelterforce and to social justice.
      • Be poised and confident with a great sense of humor.
      • Enjoy being around people, and are a great listener.
      • Demonstrated experience in successful organization management, fundraising and/or advertising sales and/or new business development, and building sustained relationships with funders, donor, or advertisers.
      • Bachelor's degree or higher.
      • Entrepreneurial, resourceful, energetic, meticulous, confident, collaborative, and a self-starter.
      • Comfortable quickly making connections and enjoy building relationships with new people,
      • Strong(!) Macintosh computer skills including in the use of spreadsheets, databases, WordPress, and social media platforms.
      • Experience with Google Analytics or other systems.
      • Excellent, accessible, persuasive, precise, and clear writing and speaking skills.
      • Flexibility in scheduling to attend meetings and events in the evenings and weekends.
      • Willingness and ability to travel periodically.
      • Experience with Google Ads and podcasting a plus.

      Compensation and Application Process

      You are not going to make as much money here as you would working in a law firm or slick consumer magazine. If you need to make a ton of money, you should probably keep looking. That said, we do offer a salary competitive with similar small nonprofit organizations, maybe even a little better. And we have health insurance, paid vacation, paid holidays, a Simple IRA plan, and we value work-life balance.
