    Shelterforce, the only national publication devoted to affordable housing and community development news, is seeking an Audience Growth & Engagement Specialist.

    Shelterforce is 46-year-old nonprofit publication centered around the fight for healthy communities. We serve the community development and housing justice worlds with in-depth stories on how housing organizing, community planning, and affordable housing development happen and could happen better. Our growing digital publication delivers vital reporting to people who rely on us to equip them with tools and information they can use to strengthen communities, organize for change, and influence policy on behalf of families across the nation. We have a particular interest in the roles and perspectives of organizers, community-based organizations, and nonprofits working on these topics.

    Job Description

    The driving goal of Shelterforce’s audience growth and engagement specialist will be to expand our readership, our presence online, and our content uptake/backlinks with national and local media. You will have the pleasure of working in partnership with the publisher and members of the editorial team to master all products, platforms and workflows, consider data, and develop strategies to attain our organizational goals. Expanding our presence online will require you to utilize our editorial content to come up with creative methods to engage with our audience across all of our social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn), to include creating copy and assets. It will also require you to be thoughtful about our audience and discover the best ways to deepen our connection with current readers and expand to new viewers. It may involve cultivating distribution partnerships with other outlets or partners, and supporting the distribution side of editorial collaborations. Increasing our digital footprint also includes you cultivating collaborative working relationships with national and local media outlets and reporters, to include updating our internal media/press list.

    Responsibilities

    • Manage daily social media postings across all of Shelterforce’s platforms.
    • Attend and contribute to all organizational weekly meetings
    • Lead our weekly promotional strategy meetings
    • Analyze online data and generate monthly outcome reports
    • Drive growth of audience and their engagement with our content
    • Use editorial content to pitch our stories to local and national news outlets to expand our footprint, ultimately increasing our website audience
    • Develop trusting relationships and maintaining communication with media partners
    • Follow news from other regional, state, local, national media outlets that support our interest
    • Follow social media accounts of national tenant organizations, community development organizers, justice-oriented organizations, public officials, housing partners, and others that support our interest

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in communications or equivalent experience
    • Black, Latinx, Asian and Pacific Islander, and Indigenous candidates strongly encouraged to apply
    • Proven experience with social media and media relations
    • Proven efficacy in expanding online engagement
    • A love for storytelling using social media
    • Very comfortable with building relationships and maintaining them
    • Strong knowledge of social & digital media, and media trends.
    • Strong problem-solving skills
    • Ability to effectively take direction and work both collaboratively and autonomously
    • Manage multiple projects while effectively managing timelines and meeting deadlines
    • Comfortable and culturally competent in a diverse workspace and diverse field. Committed to active anti-racism
    • Ability to travel to Northeast coast location several times/year for several days to gather with team in person.

    Position

    • Part-time, 20 hours per week
    • Compensation: $20-25 an hour
